Civitavecchia is a town and comune of the province of Rome. A sea port which is located 80 kilometres west-north-west of Rome. The harbor is formed by two piers and a breakwater, on which is a lighthouse.

It was founded by Greek sea-faring colonists from Sparta around the 8th century B.C.E. Near Taranto are remains that date back to the Bronze Age (3000-4000 B.C.E.). There are many caves and some dolmen, which are upright stones that date from the Neolithic period. Also nearby are many caves and grottos adorned with frescoes.
