EASTPORT
Eastport is a city in Washington County, Maine, United States. In 2020 the population was 1,288, so Eastport is the least-populous city in Maine. The Passamaquoddy Tribe was the native Tribe and had been on this area for at least 10,000 years. The French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1604 founded the St. Croix colony.
In the 17th century Fishermen and traders came to the area. The town from 1807 to 1809 was a center of smuggling during the Embargo Act. Eastport in 1833 was the second largest trading port after New York City. Eastport has tides of about 7,6 m, due to that the harbor remained ice free all year. The first sardine factory was established in1875. By 1886 there were 13 sardine factories. The decline of the fishing industry leaded to the bankruptcy of the city in 1937. The principal industry today is still catching fish, but tourism also has become important for the city. For many years navy ships dock there during the 4th of July and the city becomes a destination for many celebrants. The annual Maine Salmon Festival in the historic downtown district is celebrated every September and on the first weekend after Labor Day the Pirate Festival takes place.
